On Sunday, March 6, the House-Senate Budget Conference Committee agreed to fund the construction of the new University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in downtown Tampa, including in the public education capital outlay (PECO) budget an allocation of $22.5 million for the project.
While the final budget must still be approved by the House, the Senate and the Governor, with this milestone action, the legislature has moved an important regional project one step closer to reality.
“Moving the USF medical school to downtown Tampa will impact the entire Tampa Bay region,” said Rick Homans, President and CEO of the Tampa Bay Partnership. “The new location will elevate the school's national rankings, attract the highest quality professors and students, and strengthen our role as a leader in the life science industry."
The Partnership recognizes Senate Appropriations Chair Tom Lee and House Appropriations Chair Richard Corcoran, both members of the Bay Area Legislative Delegation, for their leadership on this issue, which was identified as a key priority in the 2016 legislative agenda.
