TECHNOLOGY - Initiatives of Interest

 

The Florida High Tech Corridor Council (FHTCC) was established by the Legislature in 1996 to attract, retain and grow high tech industry and to help develop the work force to support those industries in the 23-county service areas of the University of Central Florida (UCF) the University of South Florida (USF) and University of Florida (UF).  From the outset, the Council’s primary focus was to foster applied research between the partner universities and their high tech industry partners. The majority of the Council’s funding has been allocated to this effort. During its first eight years, the FHTCC has provided more than $40 million to projects that benefit 215 companies in support of more than 550 research projects.
 

The Tampa Bay Technology Forum (TBTF) is a professional association of technology and business leaders, investors, government, researchers and educators dedicated to growing and promoting Tampa Bay's technology “eco-system.” TBTF supports this purpose through networking, educational programs, awareness campaigns, and advocacy for itsmembers. Its members are technology professionals, technology companies, entrepreneurs, capital sources to fund technology, support firms, universities, government and economic development representatives.

 

82° TECH is a new technology advocacy group for companies creating and developing technology in Sarasota and Manatee counties. The organization receives administrative support from a partnership of the economic development organizations in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

VentureLink, a free service created to link entrepreneurs with angel investors and other resources they need to grow their companies. Their mission is to help growth companies gain access to early stage capital by providing an efficient system that matches the capital needs of entrepreneurs with qualified investors. VentureLink is an initiative of the Tampa Bay Technology Forum.
Star Tec - Technology Enterprise Center The STAR Technology Enterprise Center (STAR TEC) is the Tampa Bay area's first technology and manufacturing business accelerator. Housed within the Young-Rainey Science, Technology, and Research Center, a former Department of Energy facility, STAR TEC supports the growth of early stage manufacturing and technology-based companies, enabling them to migrate their product/service to market more rapidly and effectively.

 

Surf Lakeland - Downtown Lakeland in Polk County has become more attractive to high skill workers and to high tech businesses. Lakeland recently installed a free wireless internet service system for its downtown cafes, shops and common areas offering workers equipped with a wireless device easy access to their e-mail and the web. Living and working in Lakeland is now a place in Tampa Bay for those who are well – connected.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


WHERE ON EARTH...

water laser systems that can detect explosives on ships entering US Harbors?  Marine Scientists in Florida have developed a system that uses side-scanning lasers to detect explosives and other contraband attached to the hulls of ships.  The devise generates 3-D images within minutes, and can also used to scan the seafloor for mines and sunken vessels.
